November 7, 2019Personnel from the Republic of Fiji Military Force (RFMF) yesterday (05 November 2019) assisted the National Disaster Management Offices (NDMO) in evaluating the tsunami awareness drill which was conducted in Vatuwaqa.
The tsunami awareness drill included a total of 1720 students from four schools. The drill also marked World Tsunami Awareness Day, which is held annually on the 5th of November.
The four participating schools which participated included Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Primary School, Saint Marcellin Primary School, Fiji School of the Blind and Marist Brother Champagnat.
The tsunami drill exercise was an opportunity for the four schools to test their Tsunami Evacuation Standard Operating Procedure while at the same time members of the public identified their various evacuation plans.
However, Fiji School of the Blind Assistant Head Teacher, Mr Sitiveni Uluinavucu stated that there was a need for more tsunami drill exercise to be done so that students are more familiar with the evacuation plan.
In addition to this, Mr Uluinavucu also thanked the RFMF and the Fiji Police Force (FPF) for assisting the student to safety during the tsunami drill.
The Tsunami Drill is part of Governmentโs obligation towards enlightening the state of readiness for any tsunami event.
