February 23, 2023Commander Republic of Fiji Military Force (CRFMF) Major-General (Maj-Gen) Ro Jone Kalouniwai while addressing the 1/23 Grade 3 Staff Officers Course yesterday (20 February 2023) at the Officers Training Centre (OTC) emphasized the importance of understanding how to deal with complex scenarios and issues as future leaders of the RFMF.
The Grade 3 Staff Officers Course is focused on increasing the skills, knowledge, and aptitude of individuals to solve difficult issues and assist with the production and implementation of plans to support Commanders at various levels within the institution. For this, the CRFMF Maj-Gen Kalouniwai said was a crucial element to understand.
โGrade 3 is one of the courses where you actually struggle a lot. Because a lot of things are quite new, though the lingo is very familiar to all of you. Conceptualizing all of that has been taught to you into your exercises with TEWTs (Tactical Exercise Without Troops) could be challenging throughout the course.
But I thought to open this message to you this morning by informing you that I think one of the whole ideas for this course is to basically try to introduce you formally to the art of war and this is basically operational planning and staff duties,โ Maj-Gen Kalouniwai said
โAs future leaders and future commanders of this institution, winning wars is something that is one of the pathways through everything else that we do, must pass. So at your level, all of this means technical, tactical excellence.”
“When it comes to the professional arms, there is a requirement for you as a leader to have character, competence, and passion when you’re doing your responsibilities. The bottom line in your training throughout your career is all about trying to help yourselves attain the certain skills, a certain level of skills, that allows you to bring a lot more clarity when you’re trying to define the unknown.โ Maj-Gen Kalouniwai said.
In addition to this, the Commander RFMF also stressed several questions that were important for the participants to understand. He said that envisaging the question should help them better visualize, describe, direct, and access conditions throughout their attempts to define the operational process to finally achieve some decisions that form the very basis of operational leadership.
Maj-Gen Kalouniwai also wished all the participants the best during the duration of the course, as it would complement the transformation plans set in place for the institution.
โI hope in the next few weeks that as you continue on your learning path; that you will take a lot of interest in the things that are before you and be very passionate with the lessons that will be taught to you so that you’ll be able to understand and contextualize the various concepts that you need to understand to make you a better planner, in terms of the decisions that you make; and the plans that you have before you.โ Maj-Gen Kalouniwai concluded.
