April 5, 2023The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) 3rd Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment (3FIR) completed its annual Battalion (Bn) field training Exercise (Ex) Southern Diamond in the Island of Kadavu which was conducted from the 8th to the 29th of Mar 23. The Ex Southern Diamond saw the deployment of 2 Companies with the Bn HQ, Combat Service Support and other supporting elements.
Ex Southern Diamond was primarily focused on Jungle Operations (Ops) with the aim of assessing their troopsโ proficiency level in carrying out jungle operations and also enabling the unit to develop the units Standard Operating Procedures in Jungle Ops Training. The Ex Southern Diamond also tested the unitsโ capability in deploying as a Unit/ Taskforce to outer islands and also enables the unit to enhance its capability development. The Jungle Ops phase of the Ex was conducted from 15 – 26 Mar 23.
The 3FIR also conducted community engagement activities which included capability displays and conduct of quick dry attacks to schools and villages in Muanisolo, Vunisei, Drue, Nakasaleka, Yale, Rakiraki and Namalata. The community engagement phase culminated at the Namalata school grounds with display and demo by the 3FIR troops ending the day with sports with the inclusion of a team from the NZDF whilst entertainment was also provided by the RFMF Sigidrigi Band.
The Commander RFMF Major-General Kalouniwai and Commander Land Force Brigadier-General Covunisaqa also visited the 3FIR troops during the Ex with the assistance of airlift provided by the New Zealand Defence Force.
