The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) officially marked the beginning of Infantry Week 2025 today (23 June, 2025) with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Queen Elizabeth Barracks (QEB) in Nabua, commemorating Infantry Day and honouring all infantry soldiers who have served the nation.
Led by the Third Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment (3FIR), the ceremony paid tribute to Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu, Fijiโ€™s only recipient of the Victoria Cross, who sacrificed his life on 23 June 1944 during combat operations in Bougainville. His actions continue to inspire generations of Fijian soldiers as a symbol of bravery, duty, and selflessness.
The event was attended by the Commander of the RFMF, Major General Jone Kalouniwai, senior military officers, members of the Ex-Servicemenโ€™s Association, and representatives from the diplomatic corps.
As part of the week-long observance, RFMF personnel, alongside defence partners, conducted a community outreach initiative at the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital.
Infantry Week 2025 will continue with various events, including an inter-unit mini-skills competition scheduled to begin tomorrow.
Infantry Day serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made in the past and the commitment that continues today.
