Fijiโs Permanent Representative to the United Nations (PRUN) His Excellency Satyendra Prasad today paid a courtesy call on the Commander RFMF Major General Jone Kalouniwai at the RFMF Headquarters in Berkley Crescent, Suva.
The visit was an opportunity for PRUN to congratulate Maj-Gen Kalouniwai on his new appointment and reassure his support towards the RFMF in the
Ambassador Prasad also thanked the RFMF for its continued service to world peace and in particular the rapid deployment to the and recently which was made possible through the assistance of Defence Australia.
This month, the UNโs Department of Global Communications, in collaboration with the Department of Peace Operations acknowledge Fijiโs participation in United Nations Peacekeeping in its international multi-year communications campaign titled โUN Peacekeeping – Service and Sacrifice.โ The campaign expresses the United Nations gratitude to countries that contribute their uniformed men and women who serve in peacekeeping missions.
In a press release, the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix thanked Fiji for its strong support to United Nations Peacekeeping and the service and sacrifice of its military and police personnel deployed around the world under the flag.
Mr Lacroix said Fiji has set a standard of generosity that it should be proud of and that others should seek to emulate. โThe UN appreciates the service and sacrifice of the Fijian men and women who serve in dangerous and difficult environments. We are deeply grateful for their continued service,โ said Mr Lacroix.
Over its more than four decades-long participation in UN peace operations, Fiji has contributed more personnel per capita to UN peacekeeping missions than any other member state.
Today, Fiji provides more than 340 uniformed personnel including 39 women, to seven UN peace operations making it the 40th largest contributor. During Fijiโs contribution to UN peace missions, 66 Fijians have lost their lives while serving under the flag.
