The visit of the Chinese Peopleโ€™s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy Hospital Ship Ark Silk Road to Fiji from 1โ€“8 October brought significant medical and humanitarian benefits to local communities, while also fostering closer cooperation between the shipโ€™s medical teams and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).
During its week-long stay, the Ark Silk Road provided a wide range of medical services to the Fijian public. In total, 3,330 people received medical consultations and care onboard the ship. The medical teams conducted 426 operations and surgeries, admitted 22 patients to the shipโ€™s hospital ward, and carried out 65 comprehensive medical checks.
In addition, 2,531 individuals received various treatments, and the shipโ€™s crew distributed 6,927 boxes of medicine covering 202 types, ensuring that patients had access to essential medication. These efforts significantly boosted local healthcare delivery and allowed many to access specialized medical services free of charge.
The shipโ€™s medical personnel went beyond their onboard facilities to reach communities directly. They carried out four medical outreach activities at Queen Elizabeth Barracks (QEB) and local schools, bringing services to areas where they were most needed.
A cultural exchange team also conducted three visits to local Chinese communities and companies, strengthening community bonds and promoting cultural understanding. The visit also included a joint medical seminar with George Mate Medical Center (GMMC) in QEB, providing opportunities for knowledge exchange between Chinese medical teams and their Fijian counterparts.
In support of the RFMF, the Ark Silk Road medical team delivered first aid training to land force personnel, enhancing their ability to respond effectively to medical emergencies. This collaboration highlights the practical benefits of the visit, not only in terms of direct service delivery but also in building local capacity and sharing expertise.
The hospital ship was formally welcomed by RFMF Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Sapenafa Motufaga, upon arrival and was farewelled by Commander of the Naval Division, Commodore Timoci Natuva, at the conclusion of its stay. Their presence emphasized the strong spirit of cooperation and friendship that framed the visit.
The visit of the Ark Silk Road left a meaningful impact on Fijian communities by providing free, high-quality medical services to thousands, supporting health education, and strengthening professional ties with the RFMF. The combination of medical assistance, outreach activities, and cultural engagement made this mission a memorable and beneficial experience for both sides.
As the ship departed Fiji, it left behind strengthened relationships, improved health outcomes for many individuals, and new avenues for continued cooperation in the future.
